Landing in a new country after a long flight is the most fragile hour of any trip. You are tired, you do not know the layout, and you need to get to your hotel without friction. If Namibia is your destination, here is exactly what to expect when you touch down at Hosea Kutako International Airport, and how a pre-booked private transfer changes the whole arrival.
The airport and the drive
Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) sits about 45 minutes east of Windhoek by road. It is a compact, easy airport: immigration, baggage reclaim and customs flow through one terminal, and you will be outside within 30 to 60 minutes of landing in most cases.
The drive into Windhoek is on good tarred road. It is scenic in a quiet way, thornbush and open sky, and it is your first real look at the country. After dark, we recommend against first-time visitors driving themselves: wildlife on the road and unfamiliar signage are a genuine combination to respect.
What a meet and greet looks like
When you book a private airport transfer with ETS, this is the sequence:
- We track your flight, so delays do not matter. The driver adjusts to the actual arrival time.
- Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with your luggage and walks you to the vehicle.
- You ride straight to your hotel, guesthouse or onward connection. No queues, no negotiating, no figuring out where the taxi rank is.
What to have ready when you book
To confirm a transfer quickly, send your flight number and arrival time, the name of your hotel or pickup address, the number of guests, and any luggage notes (surfboards and oversized items count). Tell us about child seats if you are travelling with small children.
Private transfer vs taxi on arrival
There are taxis at the airport, and plenty of travellers use them. The case for pre-booking a private transfer is simple: a fixed arrangement, a driver who is expecting you by name, a vehicle matched to your group and luggage, and one accountable company if anything goes sideways. For groups, families and business travellers, it is not close.
Inside the arrivals hall, step by step
Immigration comes first. Most visitors receive their entry stamp on arrival, so have your passport, return flight details and your first night's accommodation address handy. Baggage reclaim is a single hall with trolleys available, and customs is usually a walk-through for tourists.
If you want a local SIM card, you can buy one at the airport before you exit. Tell your driver in advance and they will allow time for it, or ask us when you book and we will advise on the current options. Having data from minute one makes the rest of the trip noticeably easier.
Matching the vehicle to your group
Two guests with light luggage fit a sedan comfortably and it is the most economical choice. Groups of four to six suit a 4x4 SUV or our stretch Land Cruiser, which also handles extra luggage with ease. For seven or more, our Quantum and Hiace buses seat 13 with generous luggage space.
Travelling with surfboards, golf clubs, bicycles or film equipment? Mention it when you book so we allocate a vehicle with the right space on the first try.
